This rare variety of Alocasia Dragon Scale comes from the tropical rainforests of Borneo and belongs to the arum family (Araceae). In its natural habitat, it grows in the shade of larger plants, where high humidity, warm temperatures and diffused light provide ideal conditions. Its elegant look and exotic appearance make it a sought-after highlight for ambitious plant lovers and collectors.

The leaves of the Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint – as the name suggests – resemble the skin of a mythical dragon. They’re thick, textured, and feel almost like moulded leather. The base colour is a silvery green tone which, combined with the dark green, strongly raised veins, creates an exceptional sense of depth. In the variegated form, irregular creamy white to yellowish variegation also runs through the leaves, making each plant unique. These colour patterns vary from leaf to leaf, giving the plant a particularly vibrant, decorative look.

The Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint thrives best in a spot with bright, indirect light. Too much sun can scorch the lighter parts of the leaves, while too little light can reduce the variegation. A windowsill with morning sun or a spot lightly shaded by curtains is ideal. You can also use a high-quality grow light, especially in the darker months.

Waterlogging quickly leads to root rot, so a free-draining soil mix is essential. In the dormant period in autumn and winter, it’s usually enough to largely skip fertilising.

Regularly checking the undersides of the leaves and maintaining a humid microclimate helps prevent infestations.
